One word describes it all......WICKED! I won't wanna say much about the storyline...just as not to spoilt it all to those who have yet to watch the movie. But I must say the whole movie is surrounded by loads of dark humour....It's sooooo wicked, its hilarious. But the whole thing about the shave blade makes me reminisce those hairdressing days when we had to practise shaving using those exact same blade on a balloon. The trick is to shave the balloon without bursting it, akin to shaving a customer without cutting them. Just that the difference between the two is that Sweeney WANTS to slit his customers' throat off!
Tim Burton's taste of gothic prevails through the monochromic serpia tones throughout the movie. When it was happier times (where Todd reminisce those times when he was Benjamin Barker, strolling along the streets with his wife), the scenes were filled with colours but when it comes to current times (being Todd's return with a vengence), the scenes are just dark and gloomy, further emphasize with the bruised-tone makeup on Depp's eye.
Esp love the method he used to portray the evilness in Todd and Mrs. Lovett through the scenes where the two of them singing is reflected through a broken mirror in Todd's shop. The broken mirror reflects uneven surfaces so the face looks distorted and 'witchy'....perfect to replicate the iniquity in them.
The casting of the movie is the cherry on top of the cake. Alan Rickman, famous for his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter series, plays the role of evil Judge Turpin. Also the guy playing Wormtail is back in this movie as yet another slave of the evil power, Beadle Bamford. Best cast had to be Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett respectively. Both had the experience in playing dark characters such as Edward Scissorhand and Willy Wonka for Depp and Bellatrix Lestrange and voice as Emily in Corpse's Bride for Bonham Carter. Depp and Bonham Carter has proven to be favourites to Tim Burton having already appeared in a few movies directed by him previously. Maybe due to the gothic personality they portrayed in previous roles. Oh, and Sacha Baren Cohen.....the joker of the whole movie. Everyone laughed the moment he appeared as Pirelli at the marketplace.
I enjoy the scene where Todd sings "Pretty Women" along with Judge Turpin while preparing to 'shave' him. The different tone sang by the two is just so harmonious given that its two men singing....strong and powerful voice of Depp gives hatred while Rickman's melodious tone renders oblivion.
Another scene worth mentioning would be scene where Todd sings with Mrs. Lovett about who in the street worth butchering..."Have a little priest" is the song sung by them in that scene and according the Mrs. Lovett, the priest's meat is good for pies because of their sinless behaviour. Worth researching the lyrics to this song because its totally awesome!
Overall the movie is just filled with hilarious dark humour! Must watch esp if you are a fan of Broadway musical dramas or a fan of the dark Johnny Depp. I am a fan of both so I just LOVED it! Must get the soundtrack too!
